DISABILITY RESOURCES 2017 SUMMER PROGRAMS

MARTIAL ARTS

Location: Pace Gym 69 Capital Drive, West Springfield (handicap accessible)
Instructor: Ken Goodrich from Center for Martial Arts
When: Tuesdays 6:00p-7:00p May 30th, June 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, and July 11th
Participants: For Ages 6-18; Anyone with a disability or physical impairment can participate. Must have some mobility in arms or legs.
Description: Martial Arts, regardless of a physical or intellectual disability, the sport is a GREAT way to get exercise while building strength, improving coordination, flexibility, and making new friends! Some upper arm strength is required.
What to wear/bring: Wear comfortable and flexible clothing with sneakers. Bring a water bottle.

DISC GOLF (Frisbee Golf)

Location: School Street Park 13 Liberty Ave, #1, Agawam, Ma (handicap accessible)
Instructor/s: Jessica Levine
When: 4:45pm-5:45pm 4 programs on Wednesdays, June 28th, July 5th, July 19th, July 26th Participants: Ages 6+ Must have upper arm strength on at least one side of the body Description: Disc golf is a fun, interactive and healthy outdoor activity played much like traditional golf. Disc Golf provides a low-impact exercise that requires focus on mental strategy and provides an avenue for people of every skill level to play together. Disc golf is played on both grass and gravel. If needed, volunteers will be available to wheel participants on the grass. Wheelchair accessible bathrooms available. After the disc golf program there will be a free outdoor concert for all to enjoy(except for June 28th). Hot dogs and burgers will be available for purchase. What to wear/bring: Athletic clothing, depending on the weather, athletic pants or shorts can be worn, t-shirt or long sleeve shirt and sneakers. Please bring a water bottle to each program.
Price: Members- $5 per person per day/Non-members $7 per person per day

BEEPBALL

Location: School Street Park 13 Liberty Ave, #1, Agawam, MA 01001
Instructor/s: Paul Weiland with help from Matt Kolensky
When: Sundays from 4:00p-5:15p. Starting June 11th, June 25th, July 2nd, July 9th, July 16th and July 23rd
Participants: Visually impaired ages 5+ (participants who are not visually impaired can also participate) Description: Beep baseball bears some similarities to softball in terms of hitting, fielding, and pitching, but with modified rules regarding scoring and outs. Sound emitting balls, as well as audible pitchers and defensive spotters, are used so that individuals can play without any sight whatsoever. What to wear/bring: Comfortable clothing/ shoes. Wear sunscreen & bring water.
Price: Members- $25 for 6 weeks/Non-members $32 for 6 weeks

ROCK CLIMBING

Location: Camp Shepard located at 370 NW Rd, Westfield, MA 01085 (handicap accessible)
Instructor/s: Jessica Levine
Time: 3:00-4:00pm (arrive 15 minutes early to get suited up) Dates: July 24th, July 27th, July 31st, August 3rd Participants: Participants with a physical disability, developmental disability or visual impairment are welcome to sign up. Participants should have just enough upper body strength and lower body strength to be able to climb on their own with some support and tension from the belayer (person holding the rope on the other end). Children/adults should be able to stand on their own for a short period of time while they are suited up in their harness. Description: Participants will learn the basics of top rope climbing and knot tying. While climbing is a fun activity, it can also be rigorous, so please be sure to consult with your doctor or a professional trainer to determine participation. What to wear/bring: Participants should wear stretchy clothing that would provide more flexibility on the rock wall. Participants should wear shoes that have rubber on the bottom for a better grip on the rock wall. If an individual has a harness and/or rock shoes, please bring them. Everyone must bring their own helmet. Please bring a water bottle.
Price: Members- $13 per day/ Non-members- $16 per day

3 Day SUMMER CAMP - Canoeing, Sled Hockey, Waterskiing

Locations: Canoeing at Jones Ferry River Access in Holyoke, Sled Hockey trail roll/walk at Amelia Park in Westfield and Westfield Rail Trail, Waterskiing in Sandy Hook, CT
Instructor/s: Various Instructors
Dates: Canoeing July 10th from 10am-2pm, Sled Hockey July 11th from 11am-3pm, and waterskiing July 13th from 8am-5pm
Participants: Ages 8-20. Participants with a permanent physical disability are welcome to attend our 3 day week summer camp. Some participants may have Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, orthopedic and physical impairments, and many others. If a participant needs support with the bathroom, we do ask that they have someone with them at all times of the program.
Description: Please contact for more information. Pick up and drop off at each location. Transportation may be provided to waterskiing.
What to wear/bring: Wear a bathing suit to water activities and bring a change of warm clothes. Bring own hockey helmet, hockey gloves, shoulder pads, knee pads, and chest pads. If a participant does not have these please let me know right away and we will try and accommodate them.
Price: Members-$55 for the 3 day camp/Non-members-$65 for the 3 day camp

WATERSKIING

Location: 90 Housatonic Drive, Sandy Hook, CT (1 ½ hrs from Springfield)
Instructor/s: Leaps of Faith Instructors, volunteers, with support from Jessica Levine
When: Arrive at 9:00a-4:00p
Dates: June 20th, August 8th, and September 14th Description/participants: The classes are personal, professional and designed to give individuals with disabilities or special need greater physical independence through adaptive water sports. Whether you’re new to water sports or a seasoned athlete, you can expect a quality program. Transportation may be provided.
What to wear/bring: Athletic bathing suit, towel, warm change of clothes, and sunscreen.
Price: Members-$8/Non-members-$12

WALK/RUN/ROLL MEETUP

Location: Stanley Park and Westfield Rail Trail (Location will be posted on Facebook the beginning of each
month)
Instructor/s: Jessica Levine
When: Once a month Starting in June 9:30am-10:30am
Dates: June 17th, July 9th, August 27th (more dates may be added and will be posted on Facebook)
Participants: Anyone with a disability or vision impairment (friends and family are welcome to join)
Description: A friendly walking and rolling group where we will be chatting and exercising at the same time!
If someone is interested in training for a 5k, you will work with Jessica on a schedule to try and accomplish
this goal. A snack, gatorade, and water will be provided.
What to wear/bring: If you have a bike, bring it! Bring a water bottle to each program.
Price: Members $3 per day/ Non-members $4 per day
