Improving Education for Individuals with Visual Impairments.

Vision Studies Awarded a New 5 year Federal Special Education Grant in O&M

First let us say “Thank You” for your continued support of the University of Massachusetts Boston Vision Studies Program. We are pleased to report that the Federal Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) has approved our most recent application to sustain and expand the regional collaboration of the six New England States, providing a continuous supply of Orientation and Mobility Specialists available to students who have vision impairment.

This 5 year award will provide financial support to a minimum of 75 new, highly qualified, pre-service O&M specialists across the 6 New England states, Virginia and Puerto Rico. Our strategic interest in adding the state of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico recognizes the increased demand for specialized personnel from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. This partnership also acknowledges the need for additional faculty resources to support expansion and growth through collaboration with George Mason University and the University of Puerto Rico.

To date, we have been one university serving six states and today we are three Universities serving 7 states and Puerto Rico.

At this juncture, Dr. Bozeman and I feel it is essential to review our established partnerships in New England. To improve future outcomes, our progress, and impact within each state with our local partners while looking forward across the next five years.  We recognize that some of our initial state leaders have changed so we want to communicate and hear the needs of each state.

We look forward to working with our State Liaisons to schedule individual state meetings that will serve to improve our efforts over the next five years.

Sincerely
