NERCVE Online Brailler Updated!

January 21st, 2009

The Northeast Regional Center for Vision Education (NERCVE) is proud to announce two major updates to the NERCVE Online Brailler. The Brailler allows individuals to practice braille drills with accurate and immediate feedback though the internet. Teachers of the Visually Impaired who have worked with the Sustaining Braille Proficiency Curriculum on the Brailler have requested the ability to backspace. We are pleased to announce that the NERCVE Online Brailler now allows for backspacing, enabling users to edit their answer to a braille drill before submitting.

In addition, the Online Brailler was updated to be fully accessible to individuals using refreshable braille displays. NERCVE has taken strides to make the Online Brailler as user friendly as possible to everyone. This feature is currently undergoing beta testing.

The NERCVE Online Brailler continues to develop in its capabilities to provide users a better learning experience. Current projects for this summer include its use in the teaching of the English Literary Braille Code in Taiwan, and the release of the independent-study curriculum for the Nemeth Code. The NERCVE Online Brailler and Sustaining Braille Proficiency curriculum were developed by NERCVE to help vision professionals in the field maintain their braille skills after a lapse in use. A future version of the Brailler may include a 40 cell, 25 line online braille editor that could be used in the teaching of braille formats.

The NERCVE Online Brailler and Sustaining Braille Proficiency self-study curriculum are currently available for certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired and Rehab Teachers. Information and registration are located at www.nercve.org.
