Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist - (180000P6)
Description
The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB) Certified Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist is responsible for training, sensory awareness instruction, route planning, home and job orientation to consumers who are legally blind in a field setting to increase safety of the individual during or while traveling. This position will cover the western region as well as parts of the central region of Massachusetts. Activities are directed towards independent mobility of consumers, assisting them to achieve their maximum level of independence and may include the teaching of long cane skills, dog guide route orientation, use of electronic aids, use of public transportation, as well as other means. The O&M Specialist coordinates with MCB staff in providing O&M training for consumers and interacts with consumers, families, and caregivers as well as outside agencies to advocate for services for consumers. The O&M Specialist provides technical assistance regarding environmental and transportation access issues and provision of O&M services to consumers. The O&M Specialist has an understanding of the following: different models of O&M services concerning consumers who are legally blind with multiple disabilities; awareness of medical aspects and psychological aspects of blindness; and different O&M skills and techniques, instructional methods, strategies and assessments. The O&M Specialist advocates for the provision of O&M services for all consumers and is responsible for maintaining and preparing records, reports and other MCB paperwork. The O&M Specialist attends meetings and conferences to maintain O&M certification.
