Improving Education for Individuals with Visual Impairments.

Orientation and Mobility Assistant (Part-Time: 28 hours) Anticipated Opening: January 7, 2019

The EDCO Habilitative Services Program (HSP) provides comprehensive therapeutic services to adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities who are residents of Wrentham Development Center. The HSP is funded through a contract with the Massachusetts Department of Developmental Services and services are provided by a talented and dedicated group of Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Adapted Physical Education Specialists, and Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Assistants.  The HSP supports quality of life and care for residents, maximizing their level of skill development, while promoting residents’ capacity to maintain their functional ability across varied environmental settings. 
 
Principal Duties:

  • Provides O&M programs and supports strategies as recommended in the Individual Support Plan, including use of Human Guide, Trailing, Protective techniques, Long Cane and Push Cane, to facilitate individual’s functional skill development, independence and/or to maintain skill level.
  • Assists O&M Supervisor in evaluating the program/support strategy and makes recommendations to O&M Supervisor for changes as appropriate.  Consults with O&M Specialist as needed regarding modifications of objectives based on the individual’s performances.
  • Determines need for and orders program equipment and supplies and instructs the individual, staff, and family in its use.  Conducts regular checks and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Provides in-services, progress notes/episodic notes, scheduling, chart audits, monitoring, and consultation; attends and actively participates in the individual’s centered/interdisciplinary meetings and clinics.
  • Instructs staff, family and the resident on use of human guide, trailing, self-protective techniques, sensitivity to blindness, and O&M objectives and modifications to be carried over into the individual’s Day Activity Program (DAP), work site, leisure time and community locations as appropriate.
  • Communicates with staff on eye glass usage; reviews progress of acceptance of eye glasses to determine need for tolerance programs; provides ongoing maintenance and adjustments of eyeglasses.
  • Completes all required documentation, reports, and statistics according to schedule.
  • Serves as Volunteer Coordinator for the annual Focus on Vision Impairment & Blindness Conference and assists as needed in other areas together with the O&M team.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor of Arts in Special Education, Vision Rehabilitation or related field.
  • Experience in working with the visually impaired.

Specialized Knowledge/Skills:

  • Experience working with an aging population.
  • Two years’ experience working with individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
