The O&M Specialist is responsible for teaching students who are blind/visually impaired and with multiple disabilities to travel as independently, safely, and efficiently as possible in any environment. The O&M Specialist teaches travel skills; plans and provides individualized O&M programs while positively motivating students to develop appropriate skills, attitudes, and knowledge; utilizes a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to students’ abilities; and creates a safe and orderly learning environment.
Education (training/degree): Required minimum BA/BS degree in Special Education – Orientation Mobility.
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations Required: Must maintain ACVREP Orientation & Mobility Certification.
Experience: Worked with youth (ages 3-21) with visual impairments in a school setting is desired, but not required.
Skills Required: : Knowledge of and experience with orientation and mobility skills. Understanding of low vision devices and assistive technology. Perform specialized assessments that will provide information regarding current functional levels.
