Orientation and Mobility Vision Rehabilitation Instructor

****Based in Western Massachusetts (Remote)

SUMMARY

Responsible for the execution of HKS’s Mission, goals and objectives through the evaluation, and provision of orientation & mobility and independent living instruction for with consumers with combined vision and hearing loss in order to foster independence in their community. This position is responsible for assessing consumers’ life and travel skills in various environments with a person centered instructional focus that matches the needs/preferences of consumers pertaining to their unique home environments to promote inclusive living. This dual position will provide instruction based on assessment findings in content areas of the orientation & mobility and independent living curriculum, employing appropriate tools, techniques, and communication preferences for individuals with dual sensory loss.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures services provided to consumers are person-centered and meet the consumers’ needs:

Assesses each consumer’s training priorities respective of indoor mobility, outdoor mobility, independent travel and communication with the public.
Assesses each consumer’s training priorities respective of instrumental activities of daily living skills to promote accessible living in the community.
b. Actively collaborates with consumers and team to design short and long term goals and training activities to create an individualized program where progress is evaluated through debriefing and further dialogue to identify further learning opportunities.

c. Communicates with all team members the consumer’s training priorities and goals.

d. Ensures consumer’s involvement in decision making process with team throughout evaluation and training.

Facilitates activities related to Independent Living and Orientation & Mobility skills evaluation with the consumer to determine realistic short- and long-term goals.

Provides instruction in safe and efficient travel skills specifically, indoor techniques including human guide, self-protection, and cane skills adapted for individuals with combined vision and hearing loss. This will include as needed night lessons and occasional weekend assignments to match consumer needs.

Evaluates progress of consumers and submits case notes along with scheduled written reports.

Participates in team meetings, community of practice (COP) meetings with Independent Living and O&M colleagues, consumer employment planning meetings, and full staff meetings.

Keeps abreast of and evaluates current IL and O&M research, teaching methods and aids. This will include gathering information, investigating trends, preparing resource material for long-term consumer use,

developing forms, participating in curriculum development.

Provide information regarding Independent Living and Orientation & Mobility to professional and stakeholders. This can include in-service training, seminars and workshops (preparation and presentation) remote consultation, on-site professional training, and preparation of videos and other material.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility/Blind Rehabilitation, Vision Rehabilitation Therapy, Special Education, Rehabilitative Services, Special Education, or related field.

ACVREP COMS certification.

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Two years of experience with teaching individuals who are Blind/Visually Impaired or Deaf/Hard of Hearing.

Proficiency in American Sign Language and braille preferred or will be expected to learn and to develop skill in American Sign Language and braille to a working level of proficiency.

ACVREP CVRT certification or plan to become certified.
