One-on-One: Providing Access for the Student with Cortical Visual Impairment

This presentation will focus on providing visual access to the school curriculum and environment for the child with Cortical Visual Impairment.

An overview of CVI characteristics will be given, as well as specific ways to adapt the student’s daily activities based on those characteristics. Emphasis will be placed on supporting the students in gaining visual access to materials and the world around them.

  • Criteria for CVI diagnosis.
  • Understanding the role of the adult ‘one-on-one’ in providing access to the child with CVI in the classroom.
  • Seeing CVI through the eyes of the child.
  • Characteristics and their impact on the child’s visual access.
  • Adapting materials and the environment one characteristic at a time.
  • Focus on cues of the child and emphasis on access.
  • Support and freedom to make mistakes in order to grow.
