The University of Massachusetts Boston Vision Studies Program and Perkins School for the Blind announce the cooperative creation of a Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) series of professional development courses for vision professionals. AAC Implementation for Children with Complex Communication Needs and Visual Impairments

This training will provide information about how to navigate the AAC assessment process with children with visual impairments. First, an emphasis will be put on the information gathering and feature matching portions of the AAC assessment process, as they relate to children with visual impairments. Then, participants will learn about a variety of light tech, mid-tech and high tech AAC options that meet the needs of children with complex communication needs and visual impairments. Additionally, AAC options that are accessible to children with complex communication needs, visual impairments and complex motor needs will be discussed. Last, AAC teaching strategies for children with visual impairments will be highlighted.
Learning objectives:
- Describe the AAC assessment process as it relates to children with visual impairments.
- Describe various light tech, mid-tech and high tech AAC options for children with complex communication needs and visual impairments, as well as for children who have additional complex motor needs.

- Identify the impact of blind pedestrians on drivers and how to reduce risk at crosswalks
- Identify the parts of a traffic and pedestrian signal cycles
- Articulate the importance of signal cycles and the implications for traveled with vision loss
- List the standards for installation and output of accessible pedestrian signals
- Teach O&M students to understand and use APS
Attendees will be required to take a short online quiz regarding signals before and after the workshops.
Switch Access: Unlocking the Mystery for Students Who are Blind or Have Low Vision

You may have heard of switch access but implementing it; that’s a different story. In this session, we will move beyond recipes, and switch accessible apps to learn exactly HOW switches interact with devices and what METHODS to use when developing a switch program for a student. You will leave this session able to have meaningful conversations about how to start a switch program and a plan outlining how you will begin implementing switch access with your student.
Learning objectives:
- Explain the 4 pieces to a switch accessible setup
- Identify and explain 4 of the 8 stepping stones to switch access.
- Create a step by step implementation plan for a student using switch access
